Moving Home Anxieties and How to Deal With Them

January 7th, 2009

Results of a study designed to determine the level of stress that moving house caused on people showed that 52 percent of respondents have experienced a high level of anxiety. About half of these respondents said that they have experienced very high level of stress. Only 19 percent of them claimed that their level of stress was low.

Some of the potential sources of stress that homeowners feel about moving home are:

  • Concern of being deceived by moving companies – Some fraudulent companies offering moving services increased the price that they have quoted after they take hold of your belongings. And they refused to release these belongings until you pay the amount that they want. You should avoid taking a price quote over the Internet or the telephone because if movers cannot see the belongings that are about to be moved, how can they give a legitimate and reasonable moving quote.
  • Concern over the amount of work involved – Develop a plan and adhere to a strict schedule. Establish a room solely for keeping boxes and packing things.
  • Concern of damaging belongings – If you are concerned over letting movers handle fragile items, moved them personally yourself or ask movers to be very careful about moving these items.
  • Fear of adjusting – Before moving in, you and your family tour your new neighborhood first for familiarization. Visualize starting an exciting and happy life in your new place.
  • Concern that your children will hate you for uprooting them – Involved your children in the planning and moving process. Update them weekly on the preparations for moving.
  • Concern over the changes – The idea that you have to change your address, automobile and homeowner’s policy and sign up for new utilities can be daunting. However most of these tasks can now be done over the Internet. Set aside a day for doing all these changes.

Moving home can be exhilarating and stressful at the same time. But in the end, it is a worthwhile and rewarding experience.

Your Pets In The Moving Checklist

January 6th, 2009

Traveling could sometimes be an inconvenience. There are times when you experience bad weather condition or heavy traffic, considering that you are moving across a hundred miles and you have to bring along everything that is important to you, even your pet.

Consider hiring a long distance moving company to have better travel experience as they can move your belongings to the specific destination.

In addition, they can also take your possessions in a single move which would be favorable to you. They may assist you in taking your pet during the travel.

However, moving companies still have to get permission in order for the pet to be included on a trip through the city boundaries. Majority of the cities do not allow a pony or a horse stable in their area that is why a permit is needed in most cases.

There are a lot of companies that offer moving services. They can definitely assist you from boxes, storages and even when it comes to your pet. It is always better to shop for moving companies first before deciding which one to hire.

A nonbinding estimate is free of charge so you may want to take advantage of this. Nonbinding is when a company will assess as to how long the travel would be and they will also have to check how much your belongings weigh.

Keep in mind that when the day of moving arrives; it takes longer than what was estimated at first. There will be delays due to a bad weather condition or traffic.

Remember that pets also adjust to some things, like a long distance travel or relocating to new area. They also feel stressed at times so you may want to ask assistance from moving companies to help your pet adapt to the changes.

Avoid Scams When Looking For Moving Services

January 5th, 2009

Almost everyone who is about to move to a different house now depends on online brokers when looking for moving companies, but always be cautious as you thought you have saved a lot of money through those people when in fact you have lost a large sum of money because you were scammed.

According to Communications for the American Moving and Storage Association Vice President David Sparkman, just because the websites that you are looking at looks legit does not necessarily mean that you are transacting with credible moving companies.

An online broker’s job is to look for a moving services for the customer by placing an announcement online about his move or by referring him to a moving company.

If the broker announced that you are moving, different companies will make an offer in order to get hired. The agent will then ask for your deposit or fee.

However, there are different scams being done by a broker. An example was what happened to Florida resident Nikki Lehnoff which was almost scammed for $750. She had to move her possessions to Colorado and made an arrangement with a company. On the day of the move, no mover arrived to give assistance. Luckily for her, the credit card where she charged the $750 from was refunded.

A different scam is that a customer will get an approximate amount through the broker. That amount is really low as compared to other moving quotes.

When belongings are already loaded, the mover will tell the customer of the actual cost which is way too high than the approximate amount.

The Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is now considering rule modifications for brokers and that is for them to provide customers with a moving service leaflet, “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.” They must also disclose whether or not they are the ones moving the customer’s belongings.
